Preparing for quick presentation
Touring about and touring the Smalley Institute
Touring the Greenhouses and looking for endophytes
Finishing up the BioEYES experiment
Going for some final lab work with mentors
And finishing up with Farewell Dinner and presentations

Sythetic Biology, Communications and MD Anderson

Today's activities were....
A presentation by Dr. Bennett on Synthetic Biology
Then worked on college essays with Dr. Messmer
Went on a tour of sections of M.D. Anderson hospital
- blood services, histology and Biochem & Molecular Biology Lab
Then went to mentors' labs to continue on research

Chromatography, Brain Lab & Physics Demos

Today activities were:
Students did a Paper and Shirt Chromatography activity
Did a quick rainy campus tour
Headed over to Baylor school of Medicine for Brain lab with Dr. Basinger
Then on to Dr. Dunning's Physics Demos...
- some students had an electrifying time ;-)

Hypotheses, Communications, Chem Show and BioEYES

Today's activities included:
A hands on for formulating and testing hypotheses with Mr. Naranjo and Mr. Rodriguez
Continuation of Communications workshop with Dr. Messmer
- analyzed some essays
A Chemistry Magic Show with Dr. Mary McHale
- chem demos with discussion with students
Students had lunch with Mentors
Started work on BioEYES project with Dr. Wagner
And finished the day going to mentors' lab

Breakfast, Communications, Safety & Microscopy

Today was the beginning for the IBB 2011 Summer BioScience Program
Students from around the Houston area, other parts of Texas and someone all the way from Maryland. Welcome All!!!
Today's activities are going to include:
A Welcome Breakfast where students met their mentors for the week
A Communications Workshop with Dr. David Messmer
A Safety Training with Kathryn Cavender, since students will be working in the lab
Lunch Talk with Dr. Hutchinson, Dean of Undergrads
A Microscopy Demo with Dr. David Caprette
And students will finish the day by going to their mentors' labs.

SAST Farewell Dinner & Poster Presentation

SAST finished off their two weeks with....
A Farewell Dinner with students and their mentors along with Sponsors and IBB staff
After dinner the students presented their posters on their research...









Robotics, MD Anderson & Physiology

Today's activities include:
Engineering/Robotics presentation by Dr. Marica O'Malley
- demos of some devices by her students
Tour of MD Anderson
- students visited different sections of the hospital
Physiology Demo by Dr. Renata Ramos
- students performed two activities...ECG and EMG
Ended the day with Poster Presentation....

Group Pic, Chem Magic Show & Microscopy

Today's activities include:
Taking a Group Picture with 20th Anniversary Shirts
A Chemistry Magic Show By Dr. Mary McHale
- Dr. McHale demonstrated several chemistry experiments with explanations
Hands on Demo for Formulating and Testing a Hypotheses
- Mr. Naranjo and Mr. Cortez were the group leaders leading this activity....
Microscopy Demo by Dr. David Caprette
- Dr. Caprette showed students proper use of microscope and how to set up their own slides along with looking at organisms in those slides

Communication and Houston Museum

Today's activities include:
A continuation of essay writing with Dr. Messmer
- Students did some peer discussion of their essays and gave constructive remarks
A visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science
- Students visited the museum and finished off with an IMAX movie
They ended with more time in the lab of their mentors working on their research

Today's activities include:
A continuation of essay writing with Dr. Messmer
- Students started writing essay and Dr. Messmer reviewed their developing essays
Finishing BioEYES experiment
- Analyzed the fish embyros to see how ethanol concentrations affected growth
Students continued with research at their respective labs....

Today's activities include:
A tour of the Smalley Institute, think buckyball...
Dr. Kalovidouris informed the students on preparing a scientific poster
Continued BioEYES experiment with Cindy Fukazawa
Dr. Dunning wowed the students with some Physics demos
And then students went to continue their research at their labs
Afterwards, a little pool party for a hard week's work and a visit with Dr. West...

Today's activities will include:
Paper/T-shirt Chromatography with Efren Rodriguez and Wilmer Naranjo
A campus tour of Rice to familiarize the students with Rice History
A visit, with a hands on, at Baylor's College of Medicine Brain Lab with Dr. Scott Basinger
The students will finish off the day working in their labs with their mentors

Communication, DNA, Design Demo and Lab

Today's activities will include:
A communications workshop with Dr. David Messmer to discuss essay writing for college.
A DNA workshop with Dr. Beth Beason to isolate some DNA using lab instruments.

A lunch talk with Dr. Hutchinson, Dean of Undergrads, to discuss college life at Rice.
A safety training Noel Nguyen to prepare for students' use of Rice laboratories.
An engineering activity with Dr. Matthew Wettergreen and four Engineering Leadership Interns at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen.
And finally, students will meet up with their mentors and head to their respective labs.

IBB Welcome Dinner

The IBB Summer BioScience Program welcomed students from the Science Academy of South Texas. The students were greeted by Dr. Shamoo, , and met their mentors. The students interacted with their mentors. At the end, they gave a brief description of their mentor's field of study and what they enjoy about their college career.
The students will be working with their mentors for the next two weeks and will present their research in a Poster Presentation on the last day.

Setting Up

Initial entry to set up Blog for IBB Summer programs 2011 for high school students which is part of Rice IBB programs. The blog will be used to keep track of the days' activities and will incorporate pictures and videos. Also, it will provide a place for any pertinent links and files of interest.
